At the narrowest point of Calabria, the distance between the two seas that border the region is only about 50 km.

By car, the two coasts are connected by a four-lane highway. But that’s not the route we’re talking about here. Instead, we’ll follow the Kalabria Coast to Coast, a hiking trail that crosses the region on foot.

The adventure begins on the Ionian coast, in the seaside town of Soverato. This is the coast facing Greece, making it easy to picture its location.

Soverato boasts a wide, beautiful sandy beach. The trail starts on the seafront promenade before following the shoreline, almost with your feet in the water.

The route then continues alongside the road. While this isn’t the most scenic section, it is flat and provides the perfect warm-up before the climb begins.

After 13 km, you reach Petrizzi, the first stop on the trail. This small, charming village offers a warm welcome. A stop at the local café is a must, not only to enjoy a well-earned drink, but also to have your hiking passport stamped.

By now, the Ionian Sea is behind you, and you’re heading towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Leaving Petrizzi, the trail crosses the picturesque village of San Vito sullo Ionio, then passes Lake Acero and enters a magnificent beech forest. Cool, peaceful, and refreshing, it offers a welcome break before you arrive in Monterosso Calabro, where you’ll spend the night.

The third stage takes you through the WWF-protected Lake Angitola Nature Reserve before reaching Pizzo.

Pizzo and its castle are closely linked to French history. You’ll discover a delightful seaside town perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea. It’s also the birthplace of Calabria’s most famous artisan ice cream: the Tartufo di Pizzo.

The Kalabria Coast to Coast is a truly unique hiking route. In just a few days, it allows you to cross Calabria on foot, through the heart of an authentic region, linking two seas in only 55 km.

The trail is designed to be completed in three days, but it can easily be divided into four shorter stages for a more relaxed experience.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll be immersed in spectacular and ever-changing landscapes, meet welcoming locals who are always happy to share a moment with visitors, and enjoy delicious, comforting meals cooked with fresh local ingredients.
