An exhibition dedicated to the work of M. C. Escher (1898–1972) is coming to a close in just a few days at the Monnaie de Paris.

A fascinating Dutch artist, Escher stands at the crossroads between the scientific and the artistic worlds. His work, nourished by mathematics, impossible perspectives, and optical illusions, continues to astonish and intrigue.

He lived for many years in Rome, where he met his wife and started a family. However, the political climate established by Fascism forced him to leave Italy.

During those years, he travelled extensively throughout the country, driven by curiosity and drawn to the most remote, lesser-known, and often most authentic regions.

This is how he came to explore Calabria, discovering extraordinary landscapes that he later portrayed in his distinctive and captivating style. Villages clinging to rocky hillsides, dramatic panoramas, mineral-like architecture — visions that deeply nourished his artistic imagination.

What a surprise and what a pleasure it is to see corners of Calabria exhibited today at the Monnaie de Paris. These works tell the story of a time when travelers curious enough to venture to the very tip of Italy were still rare.

Stilo, Pentedattilo, Rossano, Rocca Imperiale… Travel stages that became drawings, lithographs, engravings.

What touched me most were Escher’s notebooks: carefully recorded stops, the names of small villages that today are home to only a handful of inhabitants — when they are not almost entirely abandoned, like Pentedattilo.

Of course, these territories are likely less unspoiled than they were when Escher travelled through them. Yet they have lost none of their strength or mystery. They remain hidden, genuine, and deeply authentic.

Travelling in Calabria means accepting to step off the beaten path. It means discovering a proud and singular region, always ready to reveal extraordinary landscapes, its unique identity, and its deep-rooted sense of hospitality. A land that, yesterday as today, continues to inspire artists… and to enchant travelers.
